Trial by Jury

Trial by Jury ( " jury ") is an operetta ( in the original: "comic opera" ) in one act, with music by Arthur Sullivan to a libretto by WS Gilbert. The premiere of the play took place on March 25, 1875 at the Royalty Theatre in London. The story is about an accusation of Verlöbnisbruchs and turns satirical against the judges and the legal system.

Trial by jury was second after Thespis Gilbert and Sullivan's opera produced production. The very popular with critics and the public work was performed during the first season 131 times.

Action

The scene takes place at the Court of the Exchequer, where the jury and spectators have gathered to attend the trial because Verlöbnisbruchs.

The usher admonished the jury to listen to the statements of the applicant and adds that they "do not care " to what has " brutalized defendant" to say. Nevertheless, he notes, " free from any bias this negotiation must be negotiated ". The defendant Edwin enters the scene and is attacked by the jury before he set out his case. Free out, he tells the court that he was sitting by the applicant because they him " obnoxious boring" and he was then immediately turned to another woman. The jury will remember their own capricious youth, but have as gentlemen, they are now, no understanding of the accused.

The judge enters the pompous scene, and describes how he came to his current position, namely, by courting the "old, ugly daughter " of a rich public prosecutor. The prosecutor then supported the career of his future son- until he was filthy rich and the daughter was sitting. The jury and spectators show up delighted by the judge and see over the fact that he has just confessed to having committed the same injustice as the accused.

The jury put the oath, and the applicant Angelina is called into the courtroom. Preceded by her bridesmaids, one of which attracts the eye of the judge in coming. But when Angelina appears in full wedding dress, she promptly conquered the hearts of the judge and the jury. In a moving speech, the applicant's lawyer Edwin defines treason dar. Angelina deceptive discomfort before and only stumbles to the judge and then the Speaker of the jury in his arms. Edwin counters that his changing affections were only natural, and offers to marry both the applicant and his new mistress, if this was all right. The judge found that this was a " reasonable proposal ", but the defenders protested that it was but a serious offense to have multiple wives. Perplexed pondering all about the "dilemma", which they now face.

In a desperate gesture Angelina Edwin hugs and laments her loss, apparently with the aim that the jury Edwin ordered to pay damages. Edwin replied that he was a smoker, drinker and when drunk, was a blank. The applicant would therefore have already endured him not a day, so that the damages should be low. The judge proposes to make Edwin drunk to see if he would actually Angelina " come and beat up ", but all the others except for Edwin reject this experiment. The impatient judge offers to close the case by himself marries Angelina. This is accepted by all, and the operetta ends with " boundless joy."
