Trial of Eligio Cedeño

Eligio Cedeño ( born December 1, 1964 in Caracas, Venezuela) was up to his escape to the United States Bank Manager of Cedel Group in Venezuela.

In 2007 he was accused by the authorities in his home country of criminal currency transfers. He is said to have introduced some 27 million U.S. dollars illegally, which he tried to conceal with an alleged purchase of computers, Venezuela, however, never reached.

In the Latin American press, the operations were " Microstar affair" sometimes reported under the Bezeichnis, the legal assessment to date is controversial. While his lawyers, in particular, the international Robert Amsterdam, a press campaign started with the aim to represent Cedeno as political prisoners, the Venezuelan government advocated a long prison sentence. Background seems the high inflation in Venezuela to be, as a result, there was a monetary reform in December 2009. In assessing the causes of the currency difficulties and a possible involvement in possibly illegal dollar transfers Eligio Cedeno was investigated. Because after 630 days no trial had yet been initiated in prison, he was released in December 2009 by a judge who ruled on the continued detention, released. Then he left Venezuela and now lives in the United States.

The events Eligio Cedeno are to be considered on the background of the political changes in Latin America. In Venezuela, as in seven other South American countries are establishing themselves in recent years, socialist governments that have been in contrast to recent history in Latin America is still not eliminated by legal coup. The government Hugo Chavez in Venezuela, which survived the attempted coup d'état in 2003, pursued a policy of distancing from the United States while at the same time encouraging the socialist Latin American countries.
