Triaxial cable

A triaxial cable is a special type of coaxial cable, which consists of three concentric conductors. These are separated by a dielectric, and a shield.

Areas of application are video technology and electrical metrology. In the electrical measurement can be measured with a suitable structure by using the triaxial cables currents in femto area. Due to the higher production effort, the cables are more expensive than coaxial cable.

The term " triaxial " for this type of cables is misleading and due upon closer examination to an incorrect derivation from the more common word " Coaxial". The term " Coaxial" literally means " on a common axis lying ", which is correct because the inner conductor and shield lie on the same axis. " Triaxial " literally means, however, " three axes", but this is not the case in the triaxial cable. Since the triaxial all three conductors have a common axis, so it is also in this case actually a coaxial cable, but with three conductors, during what might be called " triaxial " a simple, three-pole electric cable according to the word senses quite. In practice, however, this would due to the widespread use of wrong terminology actually lead only to confusion.
