Blue Green Papageiamadine

The Blue Green Papageiamadine or Forbes Papageiamadine ( Erythrura tricolor ) is a species of the family of finches. We distinguish between no subspecies. Together with the Tri-color Papageiamadine it forms a superspecies.

Description

The Blue Green Papageiamadine reaches a body length of 10 centimeters, making it one of the smallest species within the family of finches. The males are cobalt blue on the head and neck as well as on the bottom. The body top is green, the rump, the upper tail-coverts and tail feathers are bright red. The female shows a similar color distribution, but is much paler than the male. The young birds are on the body top and gloomy green on the underparts brownish green.

The Call is a zit- zit, the warning sound a tzirr, the song of the male consists of multiple repeated high trills.

Dissemination and lifestyle

The distribution of the blue-green Papageiamadine extends over Timor and the neighboring smaller islands, north of Australia. The species lives in bamboo thickets there, eucalyptus forests, thickets and clearings in palm groves. The altitudinal distribution ranges up to 1,400 m.

Characteristic of the courtship of the Blue Green Papageiamadine is a wild chase through the male. Immediately prior to copulation, which precede many bows, the male sings loud trilling. The nest is preferably applied in the tops of coconut trees. The nest consists of four to six eggs, which are incubated for 13 to 14 days. On the rearing of nestlings and the male parent bird is involved.

Attitude

There are no reliable data when the Blue Green Papageiamadine was first introduced to Europe. There were probably 1958/1859 a first imported to the Netherlands. 1989 made ​​further imports both in Germany and in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, the present affirmed succeeded in the same year.
