Tricuspid valve

The tricuspid valve ( valva atrioventricularis artery, right atrioventricular valve ) is the heart valve between the right ventricle and the right atrium. She is a sail flap and is usually in mammals of three (tri ) Sailing (Latin cuspis " tip ", " top " ):

  • Cusp angularis ( cranio- medial)
  • Cusp parietal ( lateral)
  • Septal cusp ( caudal ).

These three sails ( chordae tendineae ) by chordae connected to the three papillary muscles of the right ventricle.

The tricuspid valve acts as a check valve. It opens in the relaxation (diastole ) of the right ventricle. During systole, the valve closes by the rising pressure and prevents the backflow of blood into the right atrium. The system of chordae and papillary muscles prevents the sail by beating in systole in the right atrium.

A lack of closure of the flap is called tricuspid regurgitation. The congenital absence of the flap is called tricuspid atresia, another congenital malformation is Ebstein's anomaly.
