Triethyl borate ( triethyl borate ) is a chemical compound selected from the group of boric acid ester. Is the ethyl ester of boric acid.
Representation
Triethyl borate is produced by esterification of boric acid with ethanol in the presence of acid catalysts:
If ignited, the resulting solution, the flame colored pale yellow, because the yield of the equilibrium reaction is low. The addition of sulfuric acid catalyzed ester formation, thus increasing the flame colors in the combustion of the treated solution green.
Properties
Triethyl borate is a flammable, volatile, colorless liquid with a faint odor ethanolic. In water it decomposes and produced by combustion - as with trimethyl borate - a green flame. Triethyl borate has a kinematic viscosity of 0,503 mm ² / s
Use
Triethyl borate is used as solvent and catalyst in the manufacture of paints and other chemical compounds (e.g. sodium borohydride ). It also serves as starting product for the preparation of flame retardants.
Safety
The vapors of triethyl borate can combine with air to form an explosive mixture (flash point 11 ° C).
