Triethyl borane is a chemical compound from the class of organoboron compounds.
Production and representation
Triethylborane can be obtained by the reaction of borane with ethene. As a source of borane is a tetrahydrofuran -borane or diborane adduct.
Properties
Triethylborane is a spontaneously flammable, volatile, colorless liquid, wherein the hydrolysis is carried out with water. It decomposes when heated. The technical product is delivered as a solution with tetrahydrofuran, hexane or diethyl ether.
Use
Triethylborane is used in the paint industry and in organic syntheses. It is used together with lithium tert - butoxyaluminium hydride for reductive cleavage of ethers or epoxides. Moreover deoxidized primary and secondary alcohols. It is used also 9 rocket to ignite the JP -7 fuel in the engine and the afterburner at the Lockheed SR -71 as well as to ignite the Merlin 1B engine for the Falcon.
