Triiron dodecacarbonyl is one of three known stable carbonyls of iron. It is a deep green substance which melts at 140 ° C with decomposition.
Production and representation
Triiron dodecacarbonyl arises from iron pentacarbonyl:
Properties
Triiron dodecacarbonyl is in the form of jet-black, moderately air-stable, in a high vacuum at temperatures of 60 ° C and below sublimatable crystals. For prolonged heating above 60 ° C decomposition occurs with deposition of iron. It is slightly soluble in organic solvents. The green solution decomposes on exposure to air soon with separation of iron (III ) oxide.
