Sodium trimethylsilylpropionate (short TMSP or TSP) is a chemical compound that contains a trimethylsilyl group. TSP is the salt of Trimethylsilylpropionsäure, wherein often distinguished in the literature is not clear between the acid and its salts.

Use in the nuclear magnetic resonance

The deuterated version, in which the central four hydrogen atoms are replaced with deuterium atoms is used as a reference substance in the NMR spectroscopy. This is because the hydrogen atoms in the methyl groups attached to the silicon have a substantially different resonant frequency than most of the organic molecules. Thus, the signal at the edge of the NMR spectrum comes to lie where no overlap is to be feared. The signal is assigned a chemical shift of 0 ppm.

In an organic solvent is used instead of TSP tetramethylsilane (TMS).
