Trionychidae

African softshell turtle ( Trionyx triunguis )

The family of soft-shelled turtles ( Trionychidae ) is characterized by a soft, leather-like armor. The sides and the rear of the back shell are flexible. The neck is extremely long, the extended head runs into a trunk of. The toes of the oar -like flattened legs each have three claws free and are connected by webbing. They come in inland lakes of Africa, South and East Asia and North America before.

Soft-shelled turtles are very mobile and also quite snappy, as they also can reverse snap over their carapace because of their long neck. Their diet consists mainly of animal food, occasionally they also take herbal substances to himself. All species lay eggs round like a ball. They live in fresh water, sometimes in brackish water or even sea water. The Trionychidae appeared in the Upper Jurassic, together with the sea turtles. It was an early group of the Berger- neck turtles, whose success can be gauged by the fact that today, six (and / or seven) genera and 23 species in the inland waters of North America, Africa and Asia exist.

The absence of the keratin layer of the carapace (see turtles) may not lead to the assumption that we would have here to do with phylogenetically older turtles species but. During their development, these species have lost the keratin layer again.

Some soft-shelled turtles are extremely rare and are on the verge of extinction. From Cantor's giant soft-shelled turtle ( Pelochelys cantorii ) were recently on the Mekong in Cambodia found only three adult and twelve newly hatched juveniles. Also from the Yangtze giant soft-shell turtle existed until the discovery of a fourth animal in Vietnam only two known specimens in zoos in China and one in Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi.
