Triphenylmethanol is a chemical compound selected from the group of alcohols and triphenylmethane derivatives.
Production and representation
Triphenylmethanol can be obtained by reaction of phenylmagnesium bromide with benzophenone.
Properties
Triphenylmethanol is a colorless solid which is insoluble in water, impure products are colored beige. In solution in concentrated sulfuric acid, a deep yellow colored solution formed by forming a triphenylmethyl carbocation.
Use
Triphenylmethanol found in many chemical syntheses use and is main body of the triphenylmethane dyes. For example, it may be reacted with acetyl chloride to trityl chloride, which is used for introducing the trityl protecting group.
