Wheat ( Triticum )

The tribe Triticeae includes within the grasses ( Poaceae ), among other important cultivated grasses such as wheat, barley and rye. The flower or fruit stands of these grasses are designed as ears. Worldwide, there are more than 300 species in about 20 genera. They grow mostly in temperate and warm temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere.

Description

The species of the tribe Triticaeae are an annual or perennial grasses with or without rhizome. They grow horst- or race -like. The leaf sheaths are open to the base, rarely closed. The ligule ( ligules ) are leaf-like or as a membrane. The leaf blades are long lanceolate, flat or rolled.

The inflorescences are terminal individually, two-sided, in outline linealische to ovoid ears. The ears are flattened axes. The seated normally and flattened spikelets arise singly or in groups of two to third on a node, often it is more. They are one- to mehrblütig. The terminal flower is usually narrower or sterile. The glumes are usually in the form membranous or leathery and sometimes awned or reduced completely. The lemmas are 5 - to 11 - annoying. The palea carry two keels. The single flowers have two free Schwellkörperchen ( Lodiculae ). There are three stamens and two scars present. The Fruchknoten are usually hairy at the top. The caryopsis is elliptic or ovate.
