Triton (content delivery)

Triton was a platform for online sales of computer games, developed by the manufacturer Digital Interactive Streams. Triton was thus in direct competition with Steam by Valve. In October 2006, the company closed its business operations.

One of the best known distributed over Triton games was Prey from 3D Realms.

History

Triton was released on 10 November 2004 under the name Game xStream. After first several smaller publishers have joined the Platform, the manufacturer announced in May 2005, working with 3D Realms. This looked to publish the still present at that time in developing first-person shooter Prey on Triton.

The name " Triton" was the platform on May 8, 2006.

In October of 2006, the first user to problems with Triton: These ranged from the order or the activation of computer games through to the achievement of customer service. Joe Siegler, an employee of 3D Realms, finally found out that the manufacturer of Digital Interactive Streams has suspended business activities, without notice.

Finally, the manufacturer announced the end of Triton and assured users that Prey had ordered from Triton, they could still take the game on. Thus, a patch would be developed that solves the game from the Triton system. However, the patch did not work properly; users were assured then they would get a full retail version of the game.

On 1 December 2006 Prey was finally released on Valve's Steam. Users who have already purchased Prey could register their version on Steam - Former Triton users included.

Technology

The main argument for Triton was streaming technology, which it allowed to use games before they were fully downloaded. New content has been sent to the user as soon as they were needed by the game.

A disadvantage was the absolutely required online connection: self already downloaded games could only be carried out when an online connection existed.
