TRIUMF

TRIUMF ( an acronym for Tri University Meson Facility) is Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics. The research center is located on the south campus of the University of British Columbia ( UBC) in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It houses the world's largest cyclotron, a particle accelerator. The plant is in operation since 1974 and has been included in the list IEEE Milestone in 2010. The solenoid has a diameter of around 18 meters and weighs 4,000 tons. The protons are accelerated to a speed of about 224,000 km / s. Research interests are particle and nuclear physics, nuclear medicine and materials science. Work 450 researchers, engineers and other employees at the site. In addition there are a further 150 students. In the laboratory research annually around 1,000 national and international researchers. Funding for the center was provided by three universities. The University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria.
