Trnovačko Lake

The Trnovacko Jezero ( Montenegrin Cyrillic: Трновачко језеро ) is a glacial lake, on the territory of the municipality Plužine, in the northwest of Montenegro. Because of its proximity to the Volujak Massif he is also called Volujačko Lake.

The lake is situated between the mountain ranges of Volujak and Maglić on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, at an altitude of 1517 m above sea level, in a lovely, spacious pool. The lake has approximately the shape of a kidney, where the shoreline is weak. The lake is about 800 m long, 700 m wide and up to a maximum depth of 9 m. The lake water is very clean and allows a clear view up to 4 m depth.

The lake is fed by rainfall, springs under the lake surface and short, only intermittent mountain streams. There is no supernatural drain, so that the lake only through evaporation and seepage loses water. The seasonal fluctuations of the water level of the lake be up to about 1 m.

The reason of Trnovacko Lake is completely overgrown with water plants, floating water plants are rare. On shore distant shallows of the lake beak - sedge grow ( Carex rostrata ). The only occurring in the lake water plant is the Grassy Pondweed ( Potamogeton gramineus L.).

Despite its remote location it is a popular hiking destination.
