Tro-Breizh

The Tro Breizh - even dry Breiz ( Breton; , through the Bretagne ') was from the 13th to the 16th century, one of the largest Catholic pilgrimage in Brittany. It was also called mercy.

Route and duration of the pilgrimage

The pilgrimage took place annually, lasted a month and led to the cathedrals of the seven oldest episcopal cities of Brittany. These are

  • Saint -Brieuc,
  • Saint- Malo,
  • Dol -de -Bretagne,
  • Vannes,
  • Quimper,
  • Saint- Pol-de -Léon and
  • Tréguier.

These places were visited in turn. Thus, about 550 km have been completed in about 30 days.

Importance of pilgrimage for Catholics

It was among devout Catholics practice, participate at least once in life on dry Breizh. The faithful are hoping to gain a remission of their sins by taking part in the pilgrimage. The Tro Breizh - therefore had such great importance that the pilgrimage was necessary back down even after death in the coffin for the Catholics.

Renewal of the custom from 1994

The pilgrimage was revived in 1994. However, the conditions have been changed. The pilgrimage is now limited in any year to a one-week stage to one of the above mentioned places. The places to be visited in turn held in August, so the entire pilgrimage is shot down after seven years.
