Trochodendraceae is the only family of the order of Trochodendrales. There are only two monotypic genus, that only two species in this family.

Description

The two species grow as evergreen trees or shrubs and reach stature heights of up to 15 meters. The wood of the Trochodendraceae has no tracheae. The bark of the branches is gray - brown. Stipules are present.

In inflorescences, the flowers are borne. The hermaphrodite flowers are very different in the two genera; at Tetracentron they are fourfold. There are only four ( Tetracentron ) or no to five ( Trochodendron ) bloom yet. In Tetracentron four and Trochodendron many more or less spirally arranged stamens are present. In Tetracentron 4 and usually 6 to 11 ( 4-17 ) Upper constant carpels present in Trochodendron that have grown only laterally. There shall be collecting fruits from 4 to 17 Balgfrüchten.

Systematics and distribution

The Trochodendraceae are the only family of the order Trochodendrales. These are relatively basal within the Kerneudikotyledonen.

The family contains only two monotypic genera:

  • Tetracentron Oliv.: Tetra sinense Oliv. , It is a tree species from central and western China ( in the provinces: southern Gansu, Guizhou, southwestern Henan, western Hubei, northwestern and southwestern Hunan, southern Shaanxi, Sichuan, southern and southeastern Xizang and Yunnan ). But also in northern Myanmar ( Burma), eastern Nepal, Bhutan, northeastern India and northern Vietnam were discovered natural stocks. It grows along streams and forest edges of laurel forests or semi- evergreen forests at altitudes 1100-3500 meters.
  • Trochodendron Siebold & Zucc aralioides. It grows as a tree or shrub in the laurel forests of Taiwan, Korea, and the southern on the southern Japanese islands at altitude 300-2700 meters.
