Troina

Troina is a city in the province of Enna in Sicily region of Italy with 9581 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Troina is located 63 km north-east of Enna. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture and sheep farming.

The neighboring municipalities are Bronte (CT ), Cerami, Cesarò (ME), Gagliano Castelferrato, Randazzo (CT ), Regalbuto and San Teodoro (ME).

History

The town was founded as Sicel settlement. In 1062 it was conquered by the Normans. It was here from 1081 to 1096 the first Latin bishopric in Sicily. After the bishop's seat was moved to Messina, was from the old episcopal see the titular Troyna. In Troina the Basilian monastery of San Michele was built.

Attractions

The parish church has a Norman tower as a bell. The church was substantially rebuilt in the 15th and 18th centuries. The Church of Annunziata was built in the 16th century, is also worth seeing the church of San Silvestro.

In the vicinity of Troina the reservoir is Ancipa. The barrier dike is 120 m high. The lake has an area of 51 km ².
