Trois Frères

The Three Brothers Cave ( Cave of the Trois- Frères French ) is one of the three caves of VolP services. It lies in the southern French region of Midi -Pyrénées, in the department of Ariège in the field of community Montesquieu- Avantès and belongs to the radius of the Franco-Cantabrian cave art. As images of the Upper Paleolithic cave contains famous cave paintings from the culture stage of the Magdalenian. The altitude is 465 meters. In the immediate vicinity are the other two VolP Caves, the Cave of Tuc d' Audoubert and the Cave of Enlène.

Cave Painting

The cave is among other things famous for the wall paintings of two beings half human half animal which is rare in the cave painting. The one at the same time has the characteristics of a human and a bison is " petit sorcier à l'arc musical " ( Warlock with mouth bow ) because it looks like he would play this musical instrument. Regarding the second being that interpretations have gradually interpreted it as a sorcerer who practiced a magic rite, or as a God of Animals, called " dieu cornu " ( Horned God ), or as a dancing shaman in trance.

The cave gets its name from the three sons of Count Henri Bégouën Max, Jacques and Louis the, receipt on July 20th or 21st 1914 discovered along with François Camel and Marcellin Bermon.
