Trojan Nuclear Power Plant

Decommissioned Reactors ( gross ):

The nuclear power plant was a Trojan nuclear power plant in Rainier, Oregon in the United States. It was the only nuclear power plant in Oregon. After sixteen years of operation, it was shut down by the operator Portland General Electric ( PGE ) for almost twenty years before the official end of the term. The decommissioning and demolition of the plant began in 1993 and was completed in 2008.

Reactor

This was a pressurized water reactor with a net output of 1095 MWe and a gross capacity of 1155 MWe. The construction of the reactor cost 450 million U.S. dollars.

Operation

The construction of Trojan began on 1 February 1970. The block was on 15 December 1975 for the first time critical. On December 23, 1975, he was first synchronized with the power grid. The commercial power operation started on 20 May 1976 on a 35 -year license that would expire in 2011. The environmentalists demonstrated with violent confrontations both inside and outside the security fence to the power plant.

In 1978, the plant was shut for nine months, while changes were made to improve earthquake safety.

1980 was decided by popular vote to build no further nuclear power plants in Oregon.

Closure

On November 9, 1992, the Trojan nuclear power plant was shut down. In January 1993, PGE announced not to take the reactor in operation.

The 150 -meter high cooling tower was blown up on 21 May 2006 at 7:00 clock by a dynamite explosion. This event marks the first implosion of a nuclear power plant cooling tower in the United States. Additional demolition of the remaining buildings of the power plant were in place by 2008.

Supposedly, the Trojan nuclear power plant was the inspiration for the nuclear power plant Springfield, Homer Simpson's work in the animated television comedy series The Simpsons. However, Matt Groening's publicist denies this.
