Troldhaugen

Troldhaugen is the name of the home of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, which is located in Hop in Fana district in the south of his hometown mountains on the shores of Nordåsvannet. He lived there from 1885 until his death in 1907. His remains and those of his wife Nina rest inside a mountain tomb near the house. The house and its surroundings are a Grieg museum since 1928.

Grieg called the building mitt best opus hittil ("my best work to date " ), although it had been designed by his cousin, the architect Schak August Steenberg Bull. The name is made up of Norwegian Trold " Troll " and haug "hill" (as well as the item - s). Grieg gave the house its name based on the name Trolddalen "Valley of the Trolls ", the locals referred to a nearby valley with the.

Above Grieg Composers hut that in this valley - close to the water - is located, was built a chamber music hall called Troldsalen in 1985.

At the museum also includes a museum building of 1995.

Grieg immortalized the name of his house in one of his lyrical piano pieces entitled Bryllupsdag på Troldhaugen ( "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen ", Opus 65, No. 6).
