Troll (research station)

The research station Troll is a Norwegian Antarctic research station in the eastern part of the Princess Martha Coast of Queen Maud Land. It was built during the Norwegian expedition 1989-1990. It lies at an altitude of 1270 meters above sea level and 235 km inland. In contrast to other research stations Troll is built on a snow-free slopes.

The station was manned until February 2005, only during the Antarctic summer, to facilities were built for permanent residence. The capacity is limited to eight people in winter, while living in the summer thanks to a tent camp up to forty people here.

On 12 February 2005, the station was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway for year-round manned operations.

2005 6.8 km north-northwest of the station was built on the ice a runway. In December 2012, first test flights were undertaken to this place with a Boeing 737, to provide information about a future replacement of the previously used Hercules C-130.

In Troll, among other meteorological and UV measurements and glaciological, biological, and physical tests to be made.
