Tronto at Trisungo

The Tronto is a river in Italy with about 115 km in length.

Geography

The Tronto rises in the mountain area of the Monti della Laga on the border of Lazio and Abruzzo regions at an altitude of about 2400 m. From Accumoli in the Lazio Tronto flows along the old Roman trade route Via Salaria ( SS4 today ) and clips the mountain villages Arquata, Acqua Santa Terme and Mozzano. In Ascoli then flows into the river Castellano in the Tronto. From Ancarano ( in Castel di Lama) to the mouth of the Tronto on the Adriatic sea is also the natural border between Abruzzo and Marche.

History

In Roman times the Tronto was a significant flow between Asculum and the harbor area around San Benedetto del Tronto. He was along as an orientation point of time still difficult to be overcome mountainous region of Salaria. The border between the two provinces was hard fought in the last century between the Kingdom of Italy and the Papal States (now brands). The well- preserved ruin in Civitella del Tronto is a reminder of that time ( small museum in the castle ).

Economy

Was the Salaria and the Tronto from Ascoli to the sea in the Middle Ages the most important trade route as they sank into the modern age of insignificance. Today along this trade route industries and factories are located.

Importance as a transport route

In order to travel to Rome, the inhabitants of the Tronto valley today use the highway Teramo ( Abruzzo ), only those who do business in Terni, Rieti and Norcia has used the ancient Roman trade route Salaria. In recent years, this funded by EU money connecting over the Apennines was expanded but not yet completed.
