Trope (music)

In connection with the Gregorian chant are tropical additions and extensions to the specified sacred chants of the Gregorian chant. These supplement the template both textual and melodic style, without however changing in their own nature. Tropics may occur as a purely melodic additives ( melisma ), as text seals on existing melismas or as additional texts with their own melodies, which precedes the underlying song, inserted or appended. The first tropical emerged in the Carolingian period.

A special case of the trope is the (classical ) sequence.
