Tropoja ( Albanian: Tropojë ) is a small town and a municipality in northeastern Albania about five kilometers from the border with Kosovo. Tropoja is also the name of the region and an administrative district - to distinguish it is today vjetër (Old Tropoja ) also called Tropoja e. The village was once the most important city in the region and the center. The administration for the region was moved in 1952 after Bajram Curr. The approximately 15 km to the west located city today is the center of the circle.

The place is situated on a hillside above the valley on 380 müa. There are some houses from the Ottoman period and a central square. In the northern part of the municipality, which is 2,661 square meters and comprises about one quarter of the circle, to high mountains, which rise to over 2000 meters and culminate in Shkëlzen ( 2405 müa ) raise. In the municipality there are several smaller lakes and glacial lakes and a reservoir for irrigation, which summarizes 160,000 m³.

The whole municipality has 4117 inhabitants ( 2011), spread over 15 villages. Like all mountain areas of Albania is also Tropoja affected by emigration. In 2001 the municipality had 5,612 inhabitants. In the central village Tropoja fell at that time with 467 people not even ten percent of them. The larger villages such as Viçidol are partly right on the main road, partly as Kerrnaj or Buçaj high on the mountain.

Most residents have relatives across the border, which was closed until after the end of the Kosovo War. During the difficult transition period in the 1990s, many residents are said to have worked as a smuggler.

The most famous son Tropojas is the doctor and current Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha, who was born just outside of the village and herded sheep as a child. During his term as President (1992-1997) he patronized his fellow citizens from Tropoja in a special way.
