Trouble in Tahiti is an opera in one act ( seven scenes) by Leonard Bernstein. The composer was his own librettist. Premiere was held in the auditorium of Brandeis University in Waltham / Massachusetts, where Bernstein was at that time a professor on 12 June 1952.

Action

The opera is not in Tahiti, but in a typical suburb of an American town in the early 50s of the 20th century, ie the time of the premiere. The title refers only to the fact that the ( fictional ) movie in the stage work plays a certain role " Trouble in Tahiti ".

The couple Dinah and Sam has been married for several years and has a child. The two still live together, but are most of the time tired. They greet each morning still friendly, but at breakfast they got into a fight. Sam is happy when he can leave the house to go to the office.
