True lemming

Mountain Lemming

The Real lemmings ( Lemmus ) are a genus of the tribe of Lemmini. Depending on the school of thought, these include three to five types:

  • Mountain Lemming, Lemmus lemmus, Scandinavia, Kola Peninsula
  • Siberian Lemming, Lemmus sibiricus, Siberia
  • Brown Lemming, Lemmus trimucronatus, Arctic regions of Alaska and Canada
  • Pribilof Lemming, Lemmus nigripes, Pribilof Islands
  • Amurlemming, Lemmus amurensis, eastern Siberia to Kamchatka from Amurbecken

Often the Brown Lemming and the Pribilof Lemming be assigned as the subspecies of the Siberian lemming.

The species of this genus inhabit the Arctic tundra. They are known for the mass migrations that they do because of the intermittent population pressure. These walks and also observed severe fluctuations in the population density resulted in Scandinavia to a theory of the " mass suicide ". Although it is incorrect according to current knowledge, it is represented as before. This also includes the Disney " documentary" White Wilderness has contributed for the taken and adjusted this theory. The truth is simply that many animals do not survive these migrations in search of new habitats.
