Trullo

Trullo ( Italian), majority Trulli, but is a term for the occurring mainly in Apulia round houses, their stone roofs taper upwards in a corbelled (so-called "wrong arch " ) and with a symbolic capstone, the Zippus, often with a sphere or another symbol to be completed.

Description

Trulli are Kraggewölbebauten of dry masonry and are built without mortar. The scale-like dark break stone roofs give the whitewashed Trullo, which originally stood in the fields and not in place, its characteristic appearance.

Due to their construction from solid natural stone with very thick walls and tiny windows the trulli offer good protection against the ongoing summer heat in Puglia, because the interior heats up slowly. In winter, a trullo for a long time stores the heat generated by a fireplace.

The forgotten until the middle of last century, poor people's houses ' experienced a renaissance since then; some are now also available as vacation rentals. In Alberobello there is a spacious self-contained neighborhood that is built entirely with Trulli. And in the neighboring communities in the region are Trulli very common and are often strung together and connected to each other, used as residences.

In Puglia and Sicily there are in the fields rustic stone buildings without pitched roof, they are called Pagghiara ( plural Pagghiare ).

In the 17th century it began to build these houses on behalf of Giangirolamo II Acquaviva d' Aragona. Since this did not pay taxes to the government, he urged the farmers to build their houses without cement and mortar, but of stone. So they could in the case of a royal inspection easily degrade the stone houses and easily build again later.
