Biography

After Karlsen long time had only participated in FIS races, he came only from the 2000/01 season in the European Cup regularly used. Here he quickly pulled one back to the top, after which he started in the World Cup from the season 2001/ 02. Already in his third World Cup race, the slalom in Aspen on 26 November 2001, he finished in eighth place, after which he was also nominated for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. There, however, he resigned from both the slalom as well as in the combination.

In the season 2002/ 03 Karlsen reached six times more a place in the top ten, including his first podium, third place in the knockout slalom in Sestriere on 16 December 2002. During the 2003 World Cup in St. Moritz, he was 24th in the giant Slalom, but dropped out in the slalom. Also six top - 10 finishes Karlsen reached the winter of 2003 /04, and celebrated on 29 February 2004 at the slalom in Kranjska Gora his first and only World Cup victory. As in the previous year it amounted therefore in the slalom World Cup eighth.

The Slalom 2004/05 season, however, was rather disappointing. With a ninth place in Flachau and a 13th place in Schladming for the best results Karlsen remained well below expectations, at the 2005 World Championships in Bormio, he retired again in slalom. Due to injury, Karlsen was missing almost the entire 2005/06 season and even after he no longer found her way back to the top. Only occasionally he could classify in the top 20. An exception was his good results at the 2007 World Championships in Åre, where he finished sixth in the giant slalom and seventh in the slalom. Even with the 13th place in the Giant Slalom World Championships 2009 in Val d'Isere surprised the Norwegians, but his best World Cup result was a 23rd place this winter.

Had Karlsen participated only in slalom and giant slalom at the World Cup before, he started from 2009, in a few super combinations, Super G and downhill. Used to be the stronger his slalom discipline, so there is the giant slalom today. While he last won the World Cup points in slalom in 2008, he was able to improve in the season 2009/10, its Giant Slalom results again. Karlsen went five times into the top 20, with his best results were two 15th places in the giant slalom in Val d'Isère and Alta Badia. He came for the first time among the top 20 in the giant slalom World Cup. At the Olympic Winter Games 2010, the Norwegians started in all five disciplines. In addition to two failures, he was ranked 21 in the giant slalom, rank 22 in the Super Combined and 46th in downhill.

In the 2010/11 season Karlsen took part only in the giant slalom at the World Cup. With tenth place in Beaver Creek, he reached for the first time in six years, a top 10 result. However, in the giant slalom World Cup he fell from the previous year fell by six places.
