Trumeau (architecture)

The term Trumeau or Trumeaupfeiler (French mullion ) denotes the middle stone pillar of a portal that supports the tympanum, particularly in the Gothic church portals. It has become necessary in the development of European architecture, as the entrance portal is always more complex and become larger in the great cathedrals and thus were static problems for this zone.

Often, pier-glass is decorated by a senior figure ( Trumeaufigur ), usually the patron saint of the church, since the beginning of the 13th century, a Christ or Madonna.
