Trysail

A trysail (English Trysail ) (also Treisegel or Trisegel called ) is a small triangular storm sail made of highly resistant and heavy canvas, which can be set in strong winds or storm instead of the mainsail. In contrast to the mainsail trysail is not over the entire leech, but only with the clew on the tree struck ( moored ). This prevents in heavy seas that make waves in the sail and damaging sails or rigging.

The sail is used if despite reefing the mainsail still too much sail area is present or the mainsail can not be reefed. For the trysail the color red or orange is often chosen so that the sailing in strong wind yacht for other vessels remains more visible, lying on a collision course ships to possibly keep free ( dodge ) can.
