Tržac (Cazin)

Tržac is a place in the municipality of Cazin ( Una -Sana Canton ), in the extreme west of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Geography

Tržac lies on the border with Croatia, approximately 20 km north of Bihac, the capital of the Canton Una -Sana. The terrain is hilly and partly wooded. Below the village flows the Korana, a flow generated at the Plitvice lakes in Croatia, and his right arm of a river Mutnica. The climate is temperate continental with cold winters and warm summers.

History

Tržac is first mentioned in the 11th century, then as a settlement in the central part of the medieval Croatian Kingdom. Since the 13th century, the place with surroundings (including the castle Tržac ) was owned by members of the prominent Croatian Frankopan. A branch of this family even wore the name Tržački ("from Tržac " ), as Bartol IX. Francopan, one of the eight sons of the late Croatian Ban Nikola IV Francopan, 1449 in the division of the large fortune of his father, among others, got the important rule Tržac. The Ottomans conquered the whole area at the end of the 16th century and displaced Croats to the northwest.

Population

Today the town has about 5,000 inhabitants ( most of them are Muslim Bosniaks ), these represent a significant portion represent of the total population of around 80,000 (latest estimates ) in the densely populated municipality of Cazin dar.
