Tshikapa

Province

Tshikapa is a district- free city in the province of Kasai Occidental in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is located about 64 km north of the Angolan border and 193 km west of the provincial capital Kananga. According to a publication of the University Library Utrecht the city's population increased from 38,900 inhabitants in 1970 to 180 900 in in 1994. However, since the Congo war has led to large fluctuations in the population, can not be made accurate current information. Tshikapa was known since its inception in the early 20th century as a major site of diamond mining.
