Tsiigehtchic

Tsiigehtchic ( " opening of the iron river " ) is a municipality in the Northwest Territories in Canada with 175 inhabitants ( as of 2006) at an altitude of 23 m above sea level

It lies at the confluence of the Mackenzie River and the Arctic Red River. They spoke Gwich'in and English. The inhabitants live mainly by fishing and hunting. The community has a volunteer fire department, no police, two churches and a grocery store.

History

The construction of the Dempster Highway, it attracted more and more people in the community. Before the construction of only three families lived in the community. Until 1994 the town was called Arctic Red River.

Tourism

Tsiigehtchic is located 66 km away from Nutuiluie Park. Other attractions include the Richardson Mountains and the Peel River Game Reserve.
