Tsimlyansk Reservoir

The Zimljansker Reservoir (Russian Цимлянское водохранилище / Zimljanskoje wodochranilischtsche ) is a reservoir on the lower reaches of the Russian Don.

The reservoir, which is located between Wolgodonsk and Kalatsch on-Don, covers 2700 km ² and has a maximum of 23.9 km ³ of storage space. Its length is 302 km, its maximum width of 38 km. The dam, built 1949-1955, is located north of the city Wolgodonsk. Here a large hydroelectric power plant with 160 MW capacity was built.

The shut-off is a combination of a dam and a gravity dam. Their total length is more than 13 km, making it one of the longest dams of the earth. The height of the structure is given in different sources with 26 or 41 m.

As part of the impoundment of the reservoir Zimljansker many residents had to be relocated. Most apartments in new schedule based on the banks of the dammed lake built by the Soviet government settlements and in Wolgodonsk.

In the Zimljansker reservoir, which is connected via the Volga - Don Canal to the Volga, flows, among other things, the river Chir.

On Zimljansker reservoir is also the Rostov nuclear power plant, which is cooled with water from the lake.

By far the largest city in the reservoir is Wolgodonsk.
