Tskhinval district

The Rajon Tskhinvali ( Ossetian Цхинвалы район; Russian Цхинвальский район ) is one of four Rajonen within the administrative structure of the internationally recognized by few countries Republic of South Ossetia. Its administrative seat and is named after the capital of the Republic, Tskhinvali. The area is 695 km2. The Rajon has about 18,000 residents who live in the city and 86 villages. The head of the administration is Inal Puchaew.

History

He was one of four Rajone of the South Ossetian Autonomous Region, but was called up in the 1960s after the temporary name of Tskhinvali Rajon Staliniri. Due to the cancellation of the autonomy status in 1990 Rajon Tskhinvali was the (now Gori municipality ) assigned Rajon Gori, the city of Tskhinvali, were granted the status of a rajonunabhängigen city. After the Georgian administrative structure, this is still valid, the Rajon Tskhinvali there is not in it. In the administrative structure of the Republic of South Ossetia Tskhinvali Rajon was restored and the city of Tskhinvali reintegrated.

According to Human Rights Watch, 2008, the most populated by Georgians villages were destroyed by Ossetian militias in the course of the Caucasus conflict.
