Tsodilo
Tsodilo to German as: " The Rock that Whispers " is a region in the Kalahari Desert in Ngamiland District in northwestern Botswana. In this area, very old rock formations with an age of about a billion years have been preserved at the surface.
Rock paintings
On an area of 10 km ² are in Tsodilo the highest concentration of rock art in the world. That is why it is called the " Louvre of the Desert" and was declared in 2001 a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
More than 4,500 paintings are preserved there. They provide a picture of human life and the change of the local environmental conditions in the last 10,000 years.
The local population worships the space as a place where the spirits of the ancestors reside.
