Tsubouchi Shōyō

Tsubouchi Shoyo (Japanese坪 内 逍遥; actually坪 内 雄 蔵Yuzo Tsubouchi; born June 23, 1859 in Oita, Mino (now Minokamo, Gifu ); † January 28, 1935 in Atami ) was a Japanese playwright, short story writer and translator.

Life

Tsubouchi studied English literature and was subsequently also at Waseda University in Tokyo as a lecturer working. Here he gave in 1891 the literary magazine Waseda Bungaku out. Who did much of his writing literaturtheroretischen SHOSETSU Shinzui. He argued for an appreciation of narrative prose as an art. He called for a true representation of the people in his unique individuality and moved the fullness of human emotions at the center of the narrative.

He founded the Bungei Kyōkai ( Literary Society ), ushering in the movement of the Shingeki. As a translator, he created until 1928 a 40 volumes and thus the first complete Shakespeare translation into Japanese. It was in 1929 awarded the Asahi Prize.
