Tsui Lap Chee

Lap - Chee Tsui, OC, O.Ont (Chinese徐立 之, Pinyin Xu Lizhi; born December 31, 1950 in Shanghai) is a researcher in the field of Genetics and Vice - President of the University of Hong Kong.

Biography

Tsui was born in China and studied in Hong Kong at New Asia College (one of the three founding colleges Chinese University of Hong Kong ), where he earned the degrees Bachelor eventually (1972 ) and Master ( 1974). For PhD in biology, he went to the United States. There, his interest in genetics was awakened. Finally, he emigrated to Canada, where he could get a job at a children's hospital in Toronto and a position as a professor at the University of Toronto for Molecular and Medical Genetics. He conducted research there in the field of cystic fibrosis. Together with Francis Collins of the University of Michigan, he began to investigate the genetic causes of cystic fibrosis. In 1989, he was then able to locate the genetic cause of the disease.

1990 Tsui was awarded the Gairdner Foundation International Award. He was Vice - President of the University of Hong Kong, 2002.
