Tubby Hayes

Edward Brian " Tubby " Hayes ( born January 30, 1935 in London, † June 8, 1973 there ), was a British jazz musician (tenor saxophone, flute, vibraphone, composition).

Life and work

Hayes got to the age of eight violin, joined with twelve to the saxophone and became a professional musician at age 15. In 1951 he joined the band of Kenny Baker, and then played with the big bands of Ambrose, Vic Lewis and Jack Parnell. 1955 and 1956 he led his own octet ( inter alia with Dickie Hawdon ), with whom he toured Great Britain. Between 1957 and 1959 he led the band Jazz Couriers, including Ronnie Scott, Terry Shannon, Jeff Clyne and Bill Eyden and Phil Seamen, with the recordings for the label Tempo arisen; In 1959, he was with Kurt Edelhagen and went with his orchestra on tour in Germany. As the first British musician, he played 1961-1965 regularly in the U.S. and took repute for North American musicians as Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Clark Terry and James Moody on multiple disks. In London, he led in the early 1960s own big band, for which he wrote most of the compositions. In 1964 he represented at a London appearance of the Ellington orchestra Paul Gonsalves. With Charles Mingus, Dave Brubeck, John Dankworth, and Harry Beckett he was in the movie The hot night ( All night long ) (1963, directed by Basil Dearden, an Othello - variant) and with his own combo show we what we have ( 1964) and can be seen in Dr. terror 's House of Horrors (1965, directed by Freddie Francis, starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing ) and listen. He has appeared at numerous jazz festivals in Europe and led a quartet with Mike Pyne, Ron Mathewson and Tony Levin. Hayes, who also worked with Cleo Laine, died during heart surgery.

Ian Carr paid tribute to him as a rare talented composer and arranger as well as a charismatic big-band leader.
