Background

Reform of Tubilustriums

After 450 BC, the Tubilustrium as part of the laws of the Twelve Tables (calendar reform) was mostly concealed in the Roman calendar and handed down only in the months Martius and Maius open for each 23 and 24 days, together with the marked day " QRCF " ( Quando Rex Comitiavit Fas ) were reported. Another exception was the 28-day Februarius. There, the 23 days was coupled with the leap month Mensis intercalaris in a leap year mostly, which is why the ritual of Tubulustria no longer appeared after the calendar reform in Februarius.

In the following centuries the Tubilustria lost due to the lack of direct connection to the lunar calendar more practical importance, to be finally officially perceived only with the QRCF - days, although they were in use in the private sector still.

Rites of Tubilustriums

The half day Tubilustria represented monthly rites that a Nundinum were completed after the Ides of the full moon in order to strengthen the phase of the waning moon. Here, the priests sacrificed a white sheep and accompanied the rite with noisy - stretched horns; in the sacred language also tubi / tubae called. The same procedure is well attested in lunar eclipses or the cult of the dead. The mythological background of the horns is the idea, with noise of actively helping the waning or dying moon. The often interpreted from source ritual cleansing character may be due to other text sources that are connected to the rite of Tubilustria, not be confirmed.
