Tubuai

Tubuai is the name of an atoll and its main island in the South Pacific, 640 km south of Tahiti. With 2,050 inhabitants (2007 ) to 45 km ² it is the main island belonging to French Polynesia Austral Islands, which are therefore often referred to as " Tubuai Islands ". Capital is Mataura.

History

The island was discovered on 8 or August 9, 1777 by James Cook for Europe, but saw no reason to land and get involved with the martial -looking locals. He named the island after George III.

From June to September 1789 attempted Fletcher Christian and his comrades of the Bounty to settle on Tubuai and founded on the north east coast of Fort George.

Geography
