Tuen Mun

Tuen Mun or Tuen Mun New Town (Chinese屯门 新市镇, Pinyin Túnmén Xin Shizhen ) is a city in Hong Kong in the People's Republic of China. It is located in the northwest of the New Territories in Tuen Mun District. It is home to most of the inhabitants of the district of the same name and is the industrial, transport and cultural center. In Tuen Mun is the campus of Lingnan University.

History

From written records shows that the Portuguese traders Fernão Pires de Andrade landed in 1517 on the South China coast, to negotiate with merchants of Canton. The fleet of the Portuguese went on a Tuen Mun island country and killed some residents.

Until the mid-20th century Tuen Mun was a small fishing village. Only in 1973 the first neighborhoods were completed with huge skyscrapers for about 200,000 people. Today the city has half a million inhabitants.

Attractions

In the near Tuen Mun, at the foot of the 580 meter high Castle Peak, away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, the monastery Ching Chung Koon is with Temple, gazebo and garden with bonsai trees and lotus ponds. In Taoist Temple, among other treasures from the Imperial Palace in Beijing can be visited.

Traffic

Since September 17, 1988 reversed a modern tram between Tuen Mun and the northern city of Yuen Long. On 20 December 2003 Tuen Mun has also received an S- Bahn connection to Kowloon in the south of the New Territories.

The city also has connection to the 1998 newly opened Hong Kong International Airport at Lantau Iceland. Every 30 minutes high speed ferries between Tuen Mun and the airport.
