Tukaram

Tukaram (* 1608, † 1649) was an Indian poet and Hindu mystics of the 17th century. He is regarded as a saint and is one of the spiritual representatives of the Marathas.

Life and Teaching

Tukaram was a wealthy merchant who gave away his property to the hungry during a famine, thereby impoverished and eventually went bankrupt. He left his family and lived in temples. During a meditation he should have received the divine commission to write a million poems about God.

Tukaram was an important representative of the Bhakti movement whose ultimate goal is the love of God. He asserted that devotion to God alone the people holy, but not belonging to a high caste.
