Tulagi

Tulagi ( old spelling: Tulaghi ) is a city on the eponymous island in the Republic of Solomon Islands.

Geography

Tulagi is located south of Florida Iceland and north of the island of Guadalcanal in the Iron Bottom Sound. The island is 5.5 km long and has 1,516 inhabitants.

History

Tulagi was from 1896 to 1942 the capital of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate.

On May 3, 1942, the Japanese army occupied during the Pacific War, the island of Tulagi, to build an air base here. The next day the Japanese ships in the harbor of fighter aircraft of the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Yorktown were attacked. This was one of the preludes to the next carrier Battle of the Coral Sea.

The U.S. troops finally landed on August 7, 1942 in the Battle of Guadalcanal and Tulagi on Florida and the other Islands and took the island one the next day.

Today, the island is very popular with wreck divers.
