Tulchyn

Tulchyn (Ukrainian Тульчин; Tultschin Russian, Polish Tulczyn, Romanian Tulcin ) is a 15,655 inhabitants ( 2005) A city in the Vinnytsia Oblast of western Ukraine. It is located about 70 km south-east of Vinnytsia and is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons Tulchyn.

The town was first mentioned in writing in 1607 as Nestervar and came in 1667 under the name Tulczyn again under Polish suzerainty. 1787 was the place Magdeburg Rights in 1793 Tulchyn eventually became part of the Russian Empire. Tulchyn was a center of the Decembrists. During World War II it was occupied by Romanian troops of 23 July 1941 to 15 March 1944, and was during this period of occupation the Romanian name Tulcin.
