Tumucumaque National Park

The National Park Tumucumaque (Portuguese Parque Nacional do Montanhas Tumucumaque ) is located in the northwest of Brazil mainly in the state of Amapá and Pará small parts on the border with French Guiana and Suriname. The National Park is the largest rainforest reserve in the world.

The National Park extends over an area of ​​38,464 km ² and reaches a size that is nearly the size of Switzerland. The National Park was established on 22 August 2002 in collaboration of the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment and the WWF. The area belongs to the tropical rain forest of the Amazon and is quite sparsely populated, but can be found in the area numerous illegal settlements and small gold mining areas that could not be easily closed with the foundation. Fauna and Flora

In comparatively sparsely populated reserve more than half of all bird species should be native to the Amazon. Among the vertebrates belong agoutis, jaguars and primates.
