Tunceli ( zazaisch Mamekiye, Kurdish Mamekî ) is the capital of the Turkish province of Tunceli. The city has 32,815 inhabitants ( 2011). Tunceli was appointed and removed when the Dersim Rebellion 1937/1938 to the provincial capital. Before that here stood the village Mameki. The Alevi, zazaische majority referred to their city with the name zazaischen the Dersim region.

Tunceli is located at the foot of a mountain and is surrounded on all sides by mountain ranges, which made difficult to access the town for many years.

About eight kilometers northwest of Tunceli begins the Munzur Vadisi National Park, the largest and first national park in Turkey. Tunceli is located at the mouth of Harcik River in the Munzur River. In Tunceli every summer Munzur Kültür ve Doğa Festivali ( Munzur Culture and Nature Festival) takes place. Many famous people who are involved with musical performances appear on this occasion. The number of visitors of the festival sometimes exceeding 60,000.
