Tune (folk music)

Tune known in English commonly a melody or manner.

Especially in the area of the Celtic Folks Tune is a generic term for any melody, especially for instrumental pieces (mostly dance pieces ) as opposed to the sung song (English Song). The main types of tunes are Reel, Jig, Hornpipe, March, Air, Lament and Dance Set. There are also numerous regional special shapes such as Slide, Irish Polka, Fling, Barndance, Pibroch and Strathspey.

In the 19th century more tune- types such as mazurka, polka, Scottish, or Waltz were added.

A Tune usually consists of two different parts à eight bars. Several tunes are often compiled into a so-called set (most similar Tunes ) or Piece (mostly various, often increasing in tempo tunes ).
