Tungsten (V ) bromide is an inorganic chemical compound of the tungsten from the group of bromides.

Production and representation

Tungsten ( V) bromide, can be obtained by reaction of tungsten with bromine at 600-1000 ° C. Depending on the reaction conditions is also formed of tungsten ( VI) bromide, and slightly Wolframoxidbromid WOBr4. Then needs to be cleaned of tungsten ( V ) bromide by sublimation and simultaneously the decomposition of the tungsten (VI ) bromide.

It can also be obtained by reduction of tungsten (VI ) chloride with hydrogen bromide.

Properties

Tungsten ( V ) bromide is a dark gray, extremely sensitive to hydrolysis solids with green shimmering crystals. On contact with water is carried out decomposition. It is soluble in dry ether, benzene, toluene and carbon disulfide with a red color. In carbon tetrachloride and trichloromethane it comes off less well.
